The M79 grenade launcher is a single-shot, shoulder-fired, break-action grenade launcher that fires a 40×46 grenade (40mm), which uses what the US Army calls the high-low propulsion system to keep recoil forces low, and first appeared during the Vietnam War. It’s distinctive report has earned it colorful nicknames, such as “Thumper”, “Thump-Gun”, “Bloop-Tube”, “Big Ed”, “Elephant Gun”, and “Blooper” among American soldiers as well as “Can Cannon” in reference to the grenade size; Australian units referred to it as the “Wombat Gun”. The M79 can fire a wide variety of 40mm rounds, including explosive, anti-personnel, smoke, buckshot, flechette (pointed steek projectiles with a vaned tail for stable flight), and illumination. While largely replaced by the M203, the M79 has remained in service in many units worldwide in niche roles.
This iteration by FCW is the sawed-off variant of the M79 grenade launcher. Featuring real wood for its furniture and a durable metal/polymer construction for the rest of the components with the outer barrel being made using metal. It is a 1:1 replica of the real sawed-off variant, allowing the use of various Airsoft 40mm shells from the standard Airsoft 40mm shell to even the terrifying 40 Mike Magnum Shell. The trigger guard can swivel left or right to accommodate the use of thick gloves, just like the real thing. The overall construction of the FCW M79 feels solid for its built but lightweight enough that it won’t hinder the end user during long skirmishes. The action is pretty much identical to the real M79, to open the chamber to load, simply press the barrel locking latch to swing the chamber open and shut close when loaded.
